Crafting Precision: Product Development for Advanced Bioprinting

2024

Research & Strategy

ETH Zürich, Switzerland

We partnered with a medical research lab to design and develop a next-generation bio 3D printer capable of printing human bone structures with exceptional precision. As product design lead, our responsibility covered the full arc of development from early research and concept exploration to a final, production-ready design. The aim was to express the sophistication of the science while ensuring the device remained practical, manufacturable, and aligned with real-world clinical use.

What we did

  • Conducted foundational market and technology research to identify a clear design opportunity in the competitive landscape.

  • Defined a product vision that balanced scientific complexity with usability, clarity, and production feasibility.

  • Developed a cohesive form language that conveyed containment, confidence, and accessible intelligence.

  • Delivered a fully manufacturable design supported by detailed CMF development and high-fidelity visualizations.

How we did it

  • Analyzed existing bioprinting systems to understand gaps, constraints, and potential for differentiation.

  • Led iterative rounds of ideation and sketching, working closely with the client to refine direction and intent.

  • Transitioned into CAD development to define every surface with engineering constraints and manufacturability in mind.

  • Produced CMF specifications and contextual environmental renders to position the printer within its intended clinical setting.

  • Ensured the final design embodied both aesthetic restraint and scientific integrity, ready for real-world production.
